The first display of Egyptian antiquities at Highclere Castle, within the old Music Room on the ground floor, because of its position at the start of the Castle visitor-route was found to cause a visitor log-jam. For 1989, therefore, a second, dedicated display area was prepared in the Castle basement, in purpose-built cases within the deep alcoves of the old Castle knife-sharpening room. Here the fifth (and seventh) Earl`s collection continued to be displayed until 2009. Although previously damp, the environment within the room was brought up to required museum display standards and maintained by two excellent and wholly reliable Munters dehumidifiers which ran non-stop for the exhibition`s entire 20 year run.
